Surf Beats

Quem não se recorda da cena de abertura do filme "Pulp Fiction"? Um clássico... O casal a conversar sobre assaltos, os gritos histéricos da mulher... E aquela "guitarrada", que ficou para sempre nos nossos ouvidos e que reconhecemos, assim em que começa a tocar... 

Who doesn't remember "Pulp Fiction"'s opening scene? What a classic... That couple at the diner talking about robberies, the woman's hysterical screams... And that slashing guitar, which still echoes in our ears and takes us back, every time we hear it.

Aquela guitarra é de um senhor chamado Dick Dale, uma lenda viva e que reinventou um estilo de música para ajudar a criar o que chamariam de "surf rock". Uma versão instrumental do rock, mais reverb (eco). 
Enquanto "Beatles", "Beach Boys" e tantas outras bandas se fazem ouvir por multidões, mundo fora, Dick e os "Del-Tones" davam concertos em garagens e pequenos espaços, inundados de jovens, que não se identificavam com a cultura massificada.

That guitar is from a man called Dick Dale, a living legend that reinvented a music style to create what would be named as "surf rock". A more "instro" version of rock, with more reverb.
While "The Beatles", "The Beach Boys" and so many other bands were playing for crowds all throughout the World, Dick and the Del-Tones were playing in garages and small spaces flooded with youngsters who didn't find themselves in mass culture.

Não há um estilo musical específico que caracterize o surf. Cada pessoa encontra, em diferentes estilos ou em diferentes disposições, ondas(!) sonoras que relaciona com o Oceano. Mas, no ínicio dos anos 60, em plena ascenção da pop, no Sul da Califórnia, onde a cena alternativa é o surf e o "beach life", é normal que se tenha associado este som alternativo e psicadélico a esse estilo de vida.

There is no specific music gender that characterizes surfing. 
But in the beginning of the 60's at the rise of the pop era, in Southern California, where surfing and the beach life are the "b-side" scene, it is normal that this psychedelic alternative sound became associated with that lifestyle.

"A Linha" quer compreender melhor e ir aos confins da cultura surf e não só usar o nome "cultura" sempre entre aspas. 

São os padrões comuns ás pessoas, que vivem a cultura surf,  que definem a cultura surf. Entre outros factores, uma cultura é definida pelos significados que as pessoas atribuem ás coisas (signos).

Não posso desenvolver, muito profundamente, o assunto, pois não sou sociólogo nem antropólogo (nem nada acabado em "ólogo"!). Há quem seja e já o tenha feito.

Dan Webber, é formado em Linguística, um filósofo e surfista, claro. Entre diversos projectos, tem um livro publicado, chamado "Surfism - The Fluid Foundation Of Consciousness". Basicamente, o Surfismo é uma filosofia que vê a existencia humana, como o surf. Se quiserem ler um bocadinho fica o link, aqui.

Dan Webber is a Master in Linguistics, a philosopher and a surfer, of course. Among several of his projects is a book called "Surfism - The Fluid Foundation Of Consciousness". Surfism is a philosophy that sees human existence as surfing. If you want to read a bit, the link is here. 

Sempre na senda da descoberta, "A Linha" pediu ao Dan que pensasse num signo, que achasse que era interpretado, da mesma forma, por todos os surfistas do Mundo.

Like an explorer as always, "A Linha" asked Dan to think of a sign that he thought it was interpreted the same way by surfers all around the world.

Ele respondeu: | Here is what he answered:

"I remember in the late seventies, someone noted how so many surf films showed the sun descending quickly into the ocean. I suppose it would only have been surf films shot on east coasts. But, even so, it does signal a sense of being in tune with natural rhythms and perhaps, more specifically, a day lived in tune with the pulsing ocean".

#rede - Fninga

Em Cabo Verde, "A Linha" "uniu dois pontos" na rede, e conheceu um dos seus "irmãos mais velhos".

"Fninga" é o nome que o Cao deu á sua criação, que retrata o "surfing as usual" dele da sua "tribo", na sua "pequena África". O conceito do blog é genuíno e tem tudo a ver connosco, que vivemos o mar também de forma metafísica. Senão, reparem:

"Fninga" é o nome nativo atribuído a um arbusto que cresce naturalmente nas regiões costeiras onde vivemos [Cabo Verde]. Embora viva em um ambiente com alta concentração de sal, essa planta consegue seleccionar os nutrientes que lhe são úteis, trabalhando assim a sua evolução enquanto SER."

"Fninga" is the name that Cao gave to his creation, whicht reports his and his tribe's surfing as usual in their "little Africa". The blog's concept is genuine and has everything to do with us, who live the ocean also in a metaphysical kind of way. If not, just read it:

"Fninga is the native name assigned to a bush that grows naturally on the coastal regions where we live [Cape Verde].Although it grows in a higly salt concentrated environment, that plant can select the nutrients it needs, working its way up to evolve as a BEING"

O que somos nós, senão fningas?
De resto tive a oportunidade de conhecer o Cao, que por pura coincidência, vivia no mesmo prédio, era amigo dos mesmos amigos que me receberam e estava sentado á mesma mesa. Quando lhe perguntei "Conheces o Fninga, o blog de "surf culture" de Cabo Verde?", ele respondeu: "Sou eu".

What are we but a bunch of fninga?
I had the chance of meeting Cao purely by accident, he lived in the same building, had the same friends in common and was sitting at the same table as me.
When asked "Do you know "Fninga" that blog about Cape Verde surfing culture?", he answered "That's me."
